Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which sperm are placed directly into a woman's uterus. During natural conception, sperm must travel from the vagina through the cervix to the uterus and down to the fallopian tubes. In IUI, the sperm are "washed" and concentrated and also placed directly into the uterus, bringing them closer to the egg. This process can increase the chances of pregnancy in some couples who have had difficulty conceiving.
